From 2nd to 5th June, Formentera will again flood of Jazz. After the huge success of the first edition last June, the Formentera Jazz Festival, strongly confirms the contents of what will be its second edition.

The Festival thanks the support of Consell Insular, and the musician’s initiative and cultural producer, Maxwell Moya (ex Ojos de Brujo) – raised in Formentera-, who is currently working at the Berklee College of Music. Also, the FJF is presented since its inception as a unique musical space in a single location and with the elegance and freedom that jazz music means.

The festival’s second edition brings some novelties, so, it will feature one more day, and new content focused on learning for adults and children presenting a series of dance, singing and percussion workshops. Another significant innovation is the incorporation of a film program by the festival In-Edit Musical Documentary Film. However, above all, this second edition highlights a great selection of live jazz performances. Let’s find it!

The Plaça de Sant Francesc is again the festival site and hosts the main stage, where the following live Jazz will take place:

tulaIt is a pleasure for the festival to have the Israeli Tula. Born and raised in Tel Aviv, she arrives with her incredible voice to the festival to premiere her new Mediterranean Jazz project ‘Tula Quartet’, in which she is accompanied by Aurélien Gana on drums, Dan Ben Lior on guitar and Thomas Warburton on the bass.  Based in Barcelona for years, Tula has a musical versatility that extends from jazz to pop and the Mediterranean ethnic music with Latin and Spanish influences, though her singing is expressed flawlessly in several languages: Spanish, Hebrew, English, French, Portuguese, and Yemenite. It will certainly be one of the most expected performances of this edition.

The FJF will also feature LESSUS, acid jazz original project born in Barcelona by the three most electrifying crazies about the grove, soul and beats such as Lessus (voice, beatbox and funk guitars), Tito Bonacera (sampler, synthesizer, and bass) and Caspar St.Charles (drums). This band is well klessusnown due to its ability to create a great modern sound with half acoustic – half electronic base, to make the listeners dance and enjoy their rich and enveloping melodies.

papaorbeThe great musician Papa Orbe, producer, bassist, “tresero” and Cuban percussionist will also be at the festival, and it will be accompanied by The Beautiful Splendid Extra Quintet. He is regular in bands such as Dusminguet and Lumbalu and collaborator on artists’ projects such as Macaco, Manu Chao, Ojos de Brujo, Amparanoia or Joan Garriga among others from Barcelona. Papa Orbe currently leads his personal projects with musicians from Mali, Senegal, France and Cuba, in which his interests and dedication mix styles like Afrobeat, the Bambara music, Cuban traditional music and the influences of jazz.

The Jazz, blues, and experimental music fusion band have just released the third album with a good reception from critics of their country. In their career, the band has played in severjazzbellal jazz festivals and concerts and clubs in the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and the Slovak Republic. Jazzabell, this time, comes to Formentera with Miroslav Michalec, a great iconic saxophonist on the island since the 80’s, who has shared many magical nights together with local musicians in all kinds of styles and genres.

The Cine Municipal Formentera is confirmed as the headquarter of the new film program presented by the festival In-Edit Musical Documentary Film, which will feature the screening of three films. Let’s get lost Chet Baker, a film about the life of Chet Baker; The three sides dream Rahssan Roland Kirk, a movie about the man who played three saxes at once; and the third is about the great history of San Andreu Jazz Band.

Also, to close the festival on Sunday… Again, we play all together!

As in the first edition, the festival’s closing is designed to hold a single meeting with all the participants in a place like no other, as it is the amphitheatre Blue Bar (Platja de Mitgorn). So, Sunday will be the Jam Session Blue Bar, among the island musicians and the guest musicians in FJF. Pure magic to farewell what can be glimpsed as a spectacular second edition of Formentera Jazz Festival.

+ About Formentera:

Located in a privileged corner of the Mediterranean, throughout its history, the Pitiusas’ lower island has always been the subject of numerous legends. It has appeared in both,  the novels written by famous writers (see Jules Verne, among others) and, as well as, in the experiences during their passage through this corner of the Balearic Islands (Bob Dylan, Gilberto Gil, Pink Floyd or Bob Marley during the 60s and 70s). No wonder that this beautiful environment was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.
